The OTF cryostat has dual refrigerant circuits and a chamber temperature range to -40o C, guaranteed with normal ambience and consistency of electricity supply. Experience suggests that chamber temperatures below -30o are seldom employed so only one of the two refrigeration circuits need to be switched on for most work. However, both circuits should be used for "quick freezing" and rapid lowering of chamber temperature.
The microtome used in the OTF cryostat has a total advance range of 0.20 to 300 microns, accomplished by five interchangeable advances. Advance 0.5/30, the most useful range, is standard equipment. The microtome has a working stroke (y) of 50 mm. Maximum section width (x) with standard equipment is 55 mm. Use of large area accessories increases x to 70mm with anti-roll device and 75mm without. Use of "large area" accessories does not interfere with conventional work or preparation of "thin sections." The least advance increment possible on the microtome is 0.2 microns.
